Positioning yourself for something new can pay off. That’s what Elizabeth Polikoff did. The fashion and retail studies junior is Ohio State’s first student ambassador for Cotton University, an industry resource for professionals, students and faculty. She also received a national fashion industry scholarship at an award ceremony where she met Martha Stewart.
As an ambassador, Polikoff educates students about cotton versatility and promotes the Cotton University professional development and learning tool. The resource supplements education about the fiber, from raw material to finished product. “It’s insight into the industry that is super helpful in your classes,” she said.
The opportunity might not have come Polikoff’s way if not for her mentor, Alexandra Suer. “I can’t tell you how often she has saved my life,” Polikoff said. “She has gotten me to where I am with my jobs and internships, and in applying for scholarships. She is the reason I have these opportunities.”
Program Lecturer Suer enjoys helping students produce ideas that could impact the industry. “(Polikoff) has all the right stuff,” Suer said. “She’s engaged, curious and asks great questions. I feel lucky to work with and support students like her.”
