Scholarship Spotlight

Mary Hayes Hemmer Scholarship
Matt Studenmund plans to share his math ability as a teacher. He cares for younger students by serving as a peer mentor. At the start of the 2015 autumn semester, he co-chaired Ohio State Welcome Leaders, overseeing 1,400 student volunteers as they moved their peers into campus dorms. In his spare time, Studenmund plays intramural ice hockey.

Doris and Clifford Risley Scholarship
James T. Morton draws on his experience as a collegiate football player and athletics administrator as he studies changes to the socio-political environment and economic structure of athletics. He focuses on shifts in revenue use to benefit student-athletes. His goal is to make college athletic departments better at allocating resources in order to produce successful student-athletes.

Thomas and Evelyn Stephens Scholarship in Special Education
Mary Sawyer, ’15 PhD, is director of educational initiatives for the nonprofit Aubrey Daniels Institute in Atlanta. Her research on coaching special education teachers and parents has improved academic and behavioral outcomes for many children. Focusing on evidence-based education, she is launching an Atlanta public charter school for students at risk for academic failure.

Taber-Thompson Fellowship; Anita R. McCormick Fellowship
Doctoral candidate Katy Rogers revised a curriculum that targets family meal routines to improve the health of children ages 4-10 at risk of obesity. She studied the 10-week program and found a positive impact on parents and children. She recently placed first in the behavioral category in Ohio State’s Russell Klein Nutrition Research Symposium.
